NATIONAL BIBLE WEEK 2010

MAY THEY BE ONE

The Word of God is the Life and Mission of the Church

The Philippines began celebrating National Bible Week and National Bible Sunday annually after President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed Presidential Proclamation no. 1923 on October 27, 1979 in recognition of the Bible "as an excellent source of principles for the development of moral and personal discipline." Celebration of NBW every last week of January was re-emphasized by President Corazon Aquino's Proclamation no. 44 in 1986. This was later followed up by President Fidel Ramos' PP 1067 which recognized that "national attention be focused on the importance of reading and studying the Bible, in building the spiritual, moral, and social fiber of our citizenry."

On 2010, National Bible Week will be celebrated on January 25-31, while National Bible Sunday will be held on January 31. The theme will still be anchored on PBS' major program which is the May They Be One Bible Campaign, with focus on the Word of God as the life and mission of the church--taken from the direction of the World Synod of Bishops last October 2008. It is our prayer that the entire nation will be ONE in celebrating the Word of God as the guiding principle of our country towards its reformation. Here are some ways you may celebrate NBW 2010.

20 Things you can do to celebrate!

1. Contact local houses of worship. Help them obtain a Bible Week Resource Packet. Ask them to announce National Bible Week and locally planned Bible Week activities and events through bulletins, newsletters, bulletin boards, and in announcements at times of worship.

2. Ask the clergy to preach a sermon during National Bible Week or National Bible Sunday on the theme.

3. Organize an interchurch service honoring the Bible at which several Bible passages are read, the hymns pay tribute to the Bible, and the sermon addresses the influence of the Bible not only in spiritual and moral issues, but in our art, literature and music.

4. Conduct a drama competition among the Sunday schools in which each school enacts a Bible story. A panel of judges could select winners and award ribbons.

5. Encourage your mayor to proclaim Bible Week in your city or municipality. Work with your mayor or your mayor's press secretary to invite as many civic and religious leaders as possible to the signing of the proclamation and release a photo of the event to the local press.
