Making Bible Centered Homes PDF Print E-mail
Fr. Jaime P. Padilla and his church, the St. Raphael Archangel Parish of Montalban, Rizal seek to influence society  by sharing God’s Word  to the family, the basic unit of society. Since January 2010, the parish has been using  May They Be One Bibles in its family-centered  activities such as in the Bible Enthronement services, house blessings,  mass marriages and Bible formation classes. This  kindled greater  interest in the Word of God with a growing number of parishioners clamoring for their own copy of the Bible.  Several  residents contributed varying amounts  – P150, P50, even P25 - to help make the MTBO Bible affordable to poor parishioners. Church workers are deployed regularly to the 13 different sitios, eight of which are located in the mountains. A father relates that he is now more forgiving and less vindictive due to the influence of the Bible. One mother says she has begun reading the Bible daily and has given up tong-its. (a gambling game).  A church worker recounts that even the poor are now giving to support the Parish’s ministry especially in livelihood and microfinance, as a result of reading and applying  Bible principles. By helping build Bible-centered homes, the Parish is gradually witnessing the spread of the transforming power of God’s Word in the community.

Bible Campaign Reaches Italy PDF Print E-mail

Bishop Broderick Pabillo DD, Auxiliary Bishop of Manila, brought  the May They Be One Bible (MTBO) campaign, to Italian soil during a recent trip to Milan. At a mass held at the Istituto Ambrogio, Bishop Pabillo shared with the Salesians of Don Bosco the news about the biggest Bible distribution and formation campaign being undertaken in the Philippines. As a result, Don Arturo Lorini was moved to give 2000 Euros (PhP 114,482.8) on the spot to help bring Bibles to the homes of poor Filipinos. Don Arturo Lorini is an Italian priest in charge of finding benefactors in Italy to help send poor children to school and help needy families abroad. Also, through Bishop Pabillo’s appeal at the Couples for Christ General Assembly and at a Bible Study gathering for Overseas Filipino Workers in Milan, an offering of 230 Euros and $500 (totaling PhP36,315.52) was collected. Bp. Pabillo graciously thanked everyone who supported the Bible Campaign and challenged those who have the means not to miss out on this great opportunity to help transform the lives of our countrymen and our nation through God’s Word.

FOOD FOR THE STOMACH AND FOOD FOR THE SOUL

It was August 29, 2009 when the Blessed Sacrament Parish in Binan, Laguna started a holistic program billed Hatid Saya (Bringing Joy) Masses. Bible Ministry Head, Bro. Ding Garcia said that the program’s objective was to help the poor by bringing them both food for the stomach and food for the soul –God’s Word.  However, not everyone could afford to buy their own Bibles. Thus when Bro. Ding heard about the May They Be One (MTBO) Bible campaign from the Diocesan Biblical Apostolate, he seized the opportunity to acquire 200 MTBO Bibles for their dual feeding program. The recipient families in  the seven sitios  of Binan then started attending weekly Bible studies.  Bro. Ding reports that the Bible distribution and formation have brought positive changes to the community - parents have become more patient with their children, and children more obedient to their parents. One attendee shares that she no longer worries about her financial needs because Jesus has become her confidence and assurance. Crime in the community has gone down and people feel safer and more at peace in their homes.

From Missalettes to their Own Bibles

For   many   Catholics   residing   in  the  urban areas, the missalette   is   the   most convenient way  to  get acquainted  with  the  Word  of  God.   A pamphlet handed to them at the beginning of Sunday mass, the missalette serves as a program guide to what will happen in the celebration. Yet for some, especially those living in remote areas, this might be the only way to get acquainted with the Word of God. Such was the case with St. Dominic Parish in San Carlos City, Pangasinan. The parishioners were using the missalette as their only copy of the Scriptures until the May They Be One Bible Campaign was introduced to them by Bishop Renato Mayugba. St. Dominic parish priest Fr. Winston Estrada said his strategy to reach the Catholic faithful in his area since 1996 has been to form Bible sharing groups called Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC). But due to poverty, most of his parishioners would have to be content with Scripture passages found in the missalette.  In November of 2009, 200 Pangasinense Bibles were distributed to parishioners as part of the MTBO campaign. Successive distributions  handed out 700 additional Pangasinense MTBO Bibles.  The Bible distributions have resulted in more fruitful BEC programs. To date, St. Dominic Parish has 50 BEC’s wherein more than 30 communities are actively participating.  With more people wanting to learn more about God’s Word, the parish was happily pressed into creating the weekly Parochial Bible Study, comprising the leaders of the different BEC’s.
